In 1397, the 3rd Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu gave up his General position and purchased a villa, which originally was called “Kitayama-dai” and belonged to the statesman Saionji Kintsune, for his retirement. After his death, Ashikagas son converted it into a Zen temple.


Todaiji

Todaiji

The Todaiji is the head temple of the Huayan School (or Kegon School in Japanese) and is located at the foot of Mount Wakakusa (Mikasa-yama). The Temple was founded in 728 by Emperor Shomu as a memorial for his first son, the Crown Prince Motoi who died one year after his birth. The most famous part is the Great Buddha Hall with its fishtail-like ornaments on top of the roof called “Shibi”.
