Now only two buildings from that era remain intact. Luckily, among these is the most spectacular, the Konjikido. Konjikido is a hall completely covered in gold. It dates back to 1124 and stands inside another building. It is hailed as on of Japan’s national treasures and important cultural properties. It is also recommended to enter UNESCO’s “World Heritage”.

Motsuji Temple

Motsuji Temple

At its peak Motsuji is said to have exceeded even Chusonji Temple in size and magnificence. The Pure Land Garden has remained since the 12th century and was almost completely preserved and has been designated a Special Historic Site. The New Main Hall was completed in 1989 and is faithful to the temple’s Heian era roots.

Matsushima Bay has been hailed as one of Japan’s three most beautiful places. Please be sure to visit the Zuiganji Temple, an important cultural monument and a fantastic sightseeing spot.

Crane City

Aizu-Wakamatsu

Aizu-Wakamatsu is a castle town with a long samurai tradition that is proudly put on display for visitors. Tsuruga Castle was built in 1384 and was destroyed after the Boshin War of 1868. Tsuruga Castle was one of the last strongholds of samurai loyal to the shogunate. The color of the roof tiles is red which is very unique among Japanese castles. Aizu, the city of the crane, invites you to enjoy a special trip during all of the four seasons.

West Street Aizu

Ouchijuku

Ouchijuku is a former post town along the Aizu-Nishi Kaido trade route, which connected Aizu with Nikko during the Edo Period. Today, Ouchijuku has been restored to look as it did in the Edo Period with telephone and electricity wires buried. The unpaved main street is lined by thick thatched roof buildings, which house a variety of shops, restaurants and small traditional Japanese inns.

Goshikinuma

Goshiki-numa

Goshiki-numa is a cluster of five volcanic lakes located at the foot of Mount Bandai. In 1888 a huge eruption completely rearranged the landscape. The eruption imparted mineral deposits to the Five Colored Lakes giving each of them their own delicate color, ranging from reddish green to cobalt blue.
