Learning about Sustainable Urban Development in Utsunomiya City

Utsunomiya City, the capital of Tochigi Prefecture in Japan, is a key regional center for commerce and industry. It is well-known for its delicious gyoza, attracting many visitors. The city has good transportation links to other city, which it takes only 50 mins from Tokyo by bullet train, making it an appealing location for businesses. Learning Sustainability from Utsunomiya City

Recently many local governments in Japan are dealing with several challenges, including a declining birthrate, an aging population, financial difficulties, and low population density caused by urban sprawl. Given these circumstances, it is essential to adopt a city-wide approach to ensure the long-term sustainability of communities, rather than just tackling individual issues. LRT (Light Rail Transit), which is at the center of Utsunomiya's urban development project, plays a significant role in tackling these challenges.

What is LRT ?:

In 2023, a new LRT line was established as a next-generation streetcar system aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. This system operates on a zero-carbon basis, using local waste as fuel and contributing to a decarbonized society. Beyond its value as a mode of transportation, it serves as a central element in new urban development, addressing the challenges of a declining birthrate and an aging population, and significantly contributes to the increase in regional value, including population growth.

A Sample Tour Program:

1. Tour of the Train depot (1 hour) :

Visit the maintenance facility & Workshop about trains and urban development.

2. Exclusive Ride (30min):

A site visit while observing the town from the train window.

Corporate logos and messages can also be displayed on the signage inside the vehicle!

*There are 60 seats on one LRT.

3. Lunch: (option)

Featuring abundant local ingredients at a restaurant along the route or at your preferred location, along with networking with Utsunomiya city delegations.
