Many local governments in Japan are dealing with several challenges, including a declining birthrate, an aging population, financial difficulties, and low population density caused by urban sprawl. Given these circumstances, it is essential to adopt a city-wide approach to ensure the long-term sustainability of communities, rather than just tackling individual issues. LRT (Light Rail Transit), which is at the center of Utsunomiya's urban development project, plays a significant role in tackling these challenges.
In 2023, a new LRT line was established as a next-generation streetcar system aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. This system operates on a zero-carbon basis, using local waste as fuel and contributing to a decarbonized society. Beyond its value as a mode of transportation, it serves as a central element in new urban development, addressing the challenges of a declining birthrate and an aging population, and significantly contributes to the increase in regional value, including population growth.
